GoDaddy - Every 1.3 seconds

By Jason Drohn

That is how often GoDaddy adds a new domain name to its registered database.  That is five times faster than five years ago!

“I’ve heard people say all the good dot-com names are taken — that’s just not the case,” he said. “The Web is just getting going. We’ve only scratched the surface.”

Pushing site signups has been the increased presence of domain names using .org, .net, and .info.  The company holds more than 20 million domain names to date.

Instant Domain Search

By Jason Drohn

There is a real nice tool over at instantdomainsearch.com which lets you search for potential domain names using ajax.  No more having to refresh, wait for the registrar, or try different varations just to come up with a winning combination.

All you do is start typing the first letter of your domain name, and it starts spitting back results.  It looks like it uses the register.com domain name database, which might be preferable depending on your registrar or choice.

The other one I use often and like quite a bit is PCnames.com.  The difference is it taps into domain name resellers, so if you want a domain name and it is registered, it shoots you to wherever the owner has the domain listed.

Register Your Domains At The Domainfest Auction

By Jason Drohn

DomainFest 2007 is running an official NICIT Domainfest Amsterdam auction website where you can add up to 20 of your own domain names.

The account is free to create.  You have to fill out some paperwork in case one of your domain names gets sold and prove that you own the domain name itself.  Other than that, it looks like a free submission.

As soon as I heard about it, I wanted to let you know.  I am on my way to insert my 20 domain names.  Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Don’t Buy The Keyword - Buy The Domain Name

By Jason Drohn

Ecommerce Times has a fantastic article concerning the use of domain names to redirect traffic to your site.

In essence, the thought is that users are bypassing search results more and more, because of the increased complexity and paid ads, so visitors are simply typing what they want into a browser, adding .com, and seeing what they come up with.

Sometimes these domains lead to parked pages, which we all know too well.  Other times, they are directed to a corporate site that targets the solution for the keyword.

In fact, it is estimated by several organizations that traffic to “parked” pages drives about 10 percent of the pay-per-click (PPC) ad market. Even more interesting, WebSideStory found that direct navigation had a 4.23 percent conversion-to-sale rate, while search engine clicks on average lead to a 2.3 percent conversion-to-sales rate.

Internet Marketers can capitalize on the following tips for finding targeted domain names and utilizing the traffic to suit their needs:

  1. Simply redirect the domain to your main site.
  2. Use the domain name as a targeted vertical portal to drive traffic to your main site.
  3. Rebrand your entire operation on the new generic domain.

Domain Aftermarket is Overdue

By Jason Drohn

CircleID.com has a great post about the streak of domain valuation we have been seeing as of late.  The article talks about the absurdity of 40 to 60 year multiples of earning tied up in the domain valuation.  Then it goes into break even points and valuation methods.

What differentiates this bubble in the domain aftermarket from Bubble 1.0 is domain parking and monetization. While it existed in 2000, it was a weirdism on the fringe. Yun Ye was quietly building his Ultsearch empire and cleaning up.

Ashford.com sells for $400,000

By Jason Drohn

Luxi Group of New York has just finished up with an acquisition.  The price?  $400,000.00 for Ashford.com.

Ashford.com used to be the online retailer of jewelry and luxury goods.

According to the Miami Herald:

The deal follows Odimo’s sales last year of the domain names Diamond.com and WorldofWatches.com in separate transactions valued at almost $10 million.

Odimo is now a nonoperating publicly traded shell company that’s looking for potential merger or acquisition candidates. It has $74 million in loss carryforwards, which a business — for tax purposes — could apply to future profits.

The original source was the Miami Herald.
